The Noir House — Architectural Lighting Design, Redondo Beach, CA

There's a version of coastal living that trades the cliché for something darker, quieter, and far more compelling. The Noir House is that version.

Perched on a hillside in Redondo Beach, California, this residence by Humnlab+ is built around contrast — dark concrete and warm wood, bold geometry and soft light, the privacy of the hillside and the openness of beach living just beyond it. When AM Light Studio came on board, the architecture already had a strong point of view. Our job was to make sure the lighting matched it.

The approach to the home sets the tone immediately. Warm cove lighting tucked beneath the wood slat canopy draws the eye toward the entry without overexposing it. The facade stays intentionally dark — the concrete and black steel read as shadow and mass — while the light inside glows through the glazing like an invitation. It's a home that reveals itself slowly, and the lighting design respects that.

At the rear, the relationship between the interior and the water becomes the central design challenge. Spherical pendant fixtures inside cast warm pools of light that spill outward through the floor-to-ceiling glass, reflecting off the still surface of the pool below. The effect blurs the line between inside and outside in a way that feels effortless — because a lot of careful thinking went into making it look that way.

Throughout the home, the lighting language stays true to the architecture. Nothing decorative for its own sake. Nothing that competes with the materiality of the concrete, the warmth of the wood, or the views that make a hillside home in Redondo Beach worth building in the first place.

The Noir House isn't finished yet. But the lighting design already knows exactly what it wants to be.
